So, What is Happening?

There are three stages of Menopause: Peri-menopause, Menopause and
Post-menopause.

Peri-menopause
This can take place whilst you are still having your periods. Anything from 4-8 years before they stop. Your ovaries are gradually rebalancing their oestrogen and progesterone production in preparation for menopause and this can occur as early as your mid 40s.

This is a powerful to know for those who are experiencing the symptoms relating to this it can be a worrying time and many women think they are going mad!

It’s a gradual process and not a disease. Homeopathic remedies will help rebalance your body and help you through these changes.

Symptoms can include:

Hot flushes, breast tenderness, worse Premenstrual Syndrome, fatigue, irregular periods, vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex, trouble sleeping, urine leakage – noticeable when coughing or sneezing, an urgency to urine and mood swings.

Menopause
This stage is defined when you haven’t had your period for 12 months or more without having other health issues like illness, surgery, or pregnancy. At this time, the ovaries stop making estrogen and progesterone.

Symptoms of the Menopause Stage:

Hot flushes – short, sudden feelings of heat, usually in the face, neck and chest, which can make your skin red and sweaty

Night Sweats – hot flushes that occur at night

Difficulty sleeping – this will affect your mood dramatically

Reduced sex drive – low libido, vaginal dryness (it an be painful during sex if you still have a healthy libido)

Poor memory and concentration

Palpitations and your heartbeat is more apparent

Body just generally aches

Post-Menopause
This stage, as in the two previous ones, will be individual to you.  Some women at this stage will have very few symptoms whereas some may still experience symptoms as a result from the permanent lowered hormone levels.  The experience is very different for every woman.  This is where homeopathy can help alleviate the troubles and treat you as an individual and help with your total well-being.

Symptoms can include:

Vaginal dryness – oestrogen is responsible for t he elasticity of the vaginal lips and vagina which can cause painful sex, or uncomfortable. The vaginal glands also produce less mucus, again, causing vaginal dryness.

Vaginal bleeding – Any vaginal bleeding should be investigated by your Doctor once your periods have ceased for over 12 months.  It is a common problem and usually caused by something minor – inflammation, or problems with thickening of the womb. Its is always best to check this out though.

Urinary incontinence – The wonders of oestrogen are never ending and its no surprise some of us suffer at this stage – it is also responsible for keeping our bladders and the uretha healthy so the low levels can create bladder problems as well as a weakening of the pelvic muscles.

Weight gain –The lowering of the female hormones can often lead to weight gain – the body can retain more fat cells during this stage in an effort to naturally lift our oestrogen levels.   I know when I’m tired I crave carbohydrates – bread, sugar etc – which is a big no-no.  Unless you are regularly exercising these will just sit around your midriff.  They will give you that energy boost really quickly but when they have depleted, your energy is likely to slam down again so you eat more of these foods.  A vicious circle!  Take a look at the ketogenic diet – it is high in good fats and protein and once you have put your body into keptosis, your hunger pains will go and you will feel more energised.  (please consult with your doctor beforehand though)

Insomnia – This is a common symptom in all three stages – and everything seems worse when we are tired doesn’t it.

Hot flushes – although rare at this stage, some women can still experience these for up to 10 years after menopause

Low Libido – again fairly rare at this stage but this can be a lingering symptom until the body rebalances to the lowered levels of oestrogen.

But do not despair………. Homeopathy can really help you through this transition and address the many symptoms your body is producing.  A homeopath will look at your individual symptoms including how they personally affect you – and not blanket treat you! What might work for one woman, may not have any affect on you.  As well as all the physical symptoms mentioned above, menopause will affect us all differently on an emotional and mental level too.  This is where homeopathy really comes into its own.
